Abstract Most Extension educators seek new ideas for organizing more exciting and animated workshops and conferences. This article describes structured networking activities also know as “speed dating” that succeed in enlivening meetings, strengthening networking, and improving learning. A speed mentoring approach was successful in sharing knowledge among farmers’ market managers with different levels of experience.
Farmers and chefs used a more classic speed dating approach to forge new relationships and make deals. Lev orst. Admit it–you wish your workshops and conferences were livelier. Often the most animated interactions and the most valuable learning take place during breaks, meals, and receptions. Extending these unstructured networking periods provides one way to improve these events.
But another, underutilized means for strengthening them is by carefully integrating structured networking periods into the conference schedule. At Oregon State University we have begun using variations on the “speed dating” model just another name for structured networking in a wide variety of settings. The results have been excellent.
Sessions in conferences and workshops, whether keynote addresses, panels, or town hall meetings, share a common characteristic: one person at a time speaks, and everyone else is expected to listen. After hours in that role, it is little wonder that participants pour out into breaks, hungry for conversation. As an antidote, Robert Chambers, in his superb book Participatory Workshops , proposes the “buzz”: “So easy.

Make sure that all participants have name tags, placed in a visible position. Prepare some basic topics for the participants to cover, e. Name, Department, Country of origin, years in the company, hobbies, etc. You need to divide participants in two, equal, groups. They have to create 2 circles, one inside the other. The first group makes a circle that is facing outwards and the second group creates a second circle, around the first group. That way every participant of the second group has someone opposite to them from the first group.
Note that only one of the two circles will move so, before first round starts, make sure that you have made clear to the participants which circle is supposed to move and also set the direction of the rotation.

Purpose of review: Respiratory syncytial virus RSV is the most common respiratory pathogen in infants and young children worldwide. Furthermore, epidemiological evidence has been accumulating that RSV lower respiratory tract infection in infants may be linked to subsequent development of recurrent wheezing and asthma in childhood. This article reviews the epidemiological evidence linking RSV and asthma and some new hypotheses of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of postviral airway inflammation and hyperreactivity that have been proposed to explain the epidemiological link.
Recent findings: New epidemiological studies have suggested that viral pathogens other than RSV, especially human rhinoviruses HRV , may play an important role in the inception of atopic asthma. Also, recent experimental evidence is challenging the widely accepted axiom that RSV is cleared from immunocompetent hosts within weeks from the onset of the infection. In particular, bone marrow stromal cells may be a frequent target of human RSV infection, develop structural and functional changes when infected, participate actively in the pathogenesis of the acute disease, and harbor the virus chronically, allowing persistence of the infection.
Summary: RSV – and possibly other common respiratory pathogens – play an important role not only in the exacerbation, but also in the inception of asthma. The latter effect may involve the persistence of latent virus in extrapulmonary tissues, similar to what has been recently found for some bacterial species. The most immediate consequence of these discoveries is that future prophylactic and therapeutic strategies for common infections caused by viral or bacterial pathogens may have to address the coverage of remote sites of latent persistence or replication, in order to avoid chronic sequelae-recurrent wheezing and asthma.
